WWII USAAF Crush Caps

This is the classic "bomber pilot" headgear, worn by USAAF pilots in Europe and the Pacific! Actually, this was the standard Army/AAF officer's dress cap, worn by pilots and non-pilots alike, but pilots gave this cap their own unique twist. Normally, this cap had stiffeners -- a support piece behind the cap device and a wire around the inside top perimeter to maintain the cap's round shape. These kept the cap in its proper, regulation military shape and angle. However, since bomber pilots wore headsets over their caps during flights, they would remove the wire stiffener to make headset wear more comfortable, causing the sides of the caps to become crushed. Eventually, the caps retained their floppy "crushed" look, giving the pilot who wore it the look of a seasoned veteran. The crush cap identified its wearer as an experiened pro, and was as much a part of his identity as his leather flight jacket.
Our Crush Caps recreate that "50 Mission" look without having to fly 50 missions! The OD green caps were worn with the winter uniform and are most often associated with the European theater, while the khaki caps were worn with the summer uniform and are most often associated with the Pacific theater. Cap includes leather visor and chin strap, buttons, and Officer's cap device. Of course, the cap looks great when worn with an A-2 flight jacket, and it's the perfect "topper" for that authentic WWII vintage look. Made by the original WWII manufacturer, exclusively for US Wings! Made in the USA.
Cap device also sold separately below.

Signature Series USAAF Horsehide A-2

Click to enlarge. Image will open in new window. |
If you want an authentic WWII A-2 jacket, horsehide is it! The original USAAF Specs (DWC 30-1415 of Sept. 1930) called for Seal Brown horsehide to be the required material for this jacket. A-2s became standard issue in 1931 and continued through 1942, when production ceased in favor of cloth flight jackets. The A-2 made a triumphant return to active duty in 1987, but in goatskin, not horsehide. US Wings is proud to once again offer a horsehide A-2.
Here is your chance to own an authentic piece of American aviation history. This jacket is genuine in every detail, and we feel it is the finest horsehide A-2 you can buy! Our Signature Series Horsehide A-2 is constructed from supple, but tough, 3 oz. horsehide. You'll notice the natural creases, graining, scratches, range marks, and other blemishes that enhance the character of the jacket. These are not imperfections, but are naturally-occurring characteristics of horsehide leather. The specially-treated horsehide leather will begin to antique rapidly as you wear it... giving this jacket that authentic "battle-worn" look. All the original spec details are here, including: snap-down collar, collar clip, front cargo pockets, mil-spec brass zipper, one-piece back, poly-cotton lining, and the original Seal Brown-colored horsehide leather. The Signature Series Horsehide A-2 is a must to own, and has our highest recommendation! Color: original seal brown. Made in the USA.

The Cockpit® Horsehide A-2
click image to see detail (will open in a new window) |
In 1930, the original specs for the A-2 jacket called for horsehide: a tough, durable & plentiful (at that time) leather. Today, the Cockpit® still produces a "tough as nails" horsehide A-2 using military-grade horsehide, although the leather is not as commonplace as it was back in the '30s. The horsehide is dyed to a russet brown and features a variety of natural creases, folds & surface graining (these are naturally occurring characteristics and are not flaws in the leather).
Features include a snap-down collar, two exterior cargo pockets (no side-entry handwarmers), one piece back, knit cuffs & waistband, stitched-down epaulets, antiqued brass zipper, and 100% cotton lining. The A-2's styling is universally beloved -- even General Douglas MacArthur (a non-flier) chose to wear a horsehide A-2 -- and its popularity continues to this day. This is a true pilot's jacket that will serve you just as faithfully as it served the AAF pilots of the '30s & '40s! Color: brown. Available in regular & long sizes. Made in the USA.
Note: just like the WWII originals, this jacket has no side-entry handwarmer pockets nor any interior pockets.

US Wings Adventure Gear Plain Front Khaki Pants
The phrase "They don't make 'em like that anymore" doesn't apply to our US Wings Adventure Gear Khaki trousers. In fact, we make 'em just like they did 70 years ago. Following the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" dictum, our khaki pants are patterned after the classic WWII US Army and USAAF originals -- with the proper, and slightly trimmer, military fit. After all, they were good enough for General MacArthur! These no-nonsense plain-front khaki pants feature deep drill-cloth pockets, heavy duty brass zipper, and rugged construction throughout. We've even included the front "watch" pocket. Don't let the low price fool you -- these khaki pants, like all the other khaki items in our Adventure Gear line, are the finest in the world. Be sure to check out our full line of khaki clothing.
Note: the pants come with a small hem to prevent unraveling. Measure, cut, and re-hem them to your desired length. To prevent excessive shrinkage, the pants should not be placed in a dryer. Drip-dry only.

US Wings Adventure Gear Khaki Shirts (short & long sleeve)
This is the finest and most rugged khaki shirt you'll ever own! Like our Khaki Trousers, we patterned our shirt after the original WWII US Army and USAAF version. The durable material and constuction makes them very rugged and abrasion resistant, yet the shirt is also very refined. Tuck it in and add a necktie for a casual business lunch. Or cast aside the tie and roll-up the sleeves when it's time to get down to business. Looks equally at-home under a sport coat or a leather "bomber" jacket. Features two pleated button-flapped chest pockets (with pen slot in left pocket flap), slightly tailored fit, and epaulets like the original Army and Air Corps shirts. Available in long- or short-sleeve versions. Be sure to check out our full line of khaki clothing.
Note: sizes run small. For a more normal fit, order one size larger. To prevent excessive shrinkage, the jacket should not be placed in a dryer. Drip-dry only.
Note: Size 2XL shirts do not have epaulets.

G.I. Pith Helmet

Click to enlarge. Image will open in new window. |
These are genuine US Military pith helmets (1940s - 1960s era), not imported reproductions. They are in unissued, brand new condition. We were lucky enough to locate a supply of these helmets in a warehouse, and are making them available to our customers. Traditionally used by the colonial forces of Europe, India, Africa and the US, it was also widely used by missionaries, archaeologists, adventurers, and anyone else living in, or traveling to, the tropics. Original pith helmets were made from pith bark, from which the helmet derives its name. Over the years, construction and materials were improved, making it one of the most practical types of hot weather headwear. Pith helmets provide excellent protection from the sun, and the adjustable one size fits all web headband allows cooling air to circulate around the top and sides of the head, aided by multiple side vents. This is the same type commonly worn by US forces stationed in the Pacific during WWII. Perfect for camping, hiking, gardening, safaris, or any other outdoor activity. Available with or without USAAF or USMC cap device. Genuine US Military-issue, in unissued condition. Simulated top vent cap and puggaree band molded into helmet. Front chin strap on brim. Khaki color. Made in the USA.

The P-51 Mustang polo shirt features a cutaway of the famous WWII fighter plane printed on a high quality 6.5 oz 100% cotton polo shirt. The shirt's design is created from a laser etched block which then stamps the shirt with the image (the modern-day equivalent to the old-style wood block print). The lines of the image are the original color of the shirt while the background is washed-out for a subtle yet incredibly detailed depiction of the P-51. Features ribbed collar & sleeves, 3-button front, and full coverage image pattern (front & back). The perfect polo for any WWII buff or aviation enthusiast!
